According to the February 11 Becker’s ASC Review, three of the largest ambulatory surgery center (ASC) companies in the US added some 4,500 physicians to their staff in 2021.
United Surgical Partners International (USPI), in Dallas reported adding more than 3,400 physicians last year, as well as 90 high-acuity service lines. USPI reportedly has more than 11,000 physicians, the most of any ASC chain.
Surgery Partners, in Brentwood, Tennessee, reported adding more than 600 physicians in 2021, after it added more than 400 in 2020. And Surgical Care Affiliates, in Deerfield, Illinois, recruited about 500 physicians, bringing its total to 8,500.
In addition, Becker’s reports that seven hospitals have opened or plan to open ASCs. Among them is Atrium Health, in Charlotte, North Carolina, which plans to open a $150 million hospital campus with an ASC.
