Editor's Note
The American College of Surgeons (ACS) has recognized 77 US hospitals for “exceptional surgical outcomes” in 2023 based on performance metrics tracked as part of the ACS National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP).
According to an October 30 ACS announcement, these hospitals were selected from among 609 eligible participants in the program, which analyzes outcomes in eight critical areas: mortality, cardiac events, pneumonia, unplanned intubation, extended ventilator use, renal failure, surgical site infections, and urinary tract infections. Hospitals must submit data annually to be considered, though only 2023 data determined this year’s results.
The program commends a select group of hospitals for achieving a meritorious composite score in either an “All Cases” category or a “High Risk” category which includes higher risk cases. Among the 77 hospitals honored this year, 43 excelled in both categories.
