A study from the American Hospital Association (AHA) finds that the regulatory burden faced by healthcare providers is substantial and unsustainable, the October 25 AHA News Now reports.
Hospitals, health systems, and post-acute care providers spend nearly $39 billion annually on administrative activities to comply with federal regulations. An average-sized hospital spends $7.6 million per year, which is equal to $1,200 every time a patient is admitted, and dedicates 59 FTEs to these activities.
Reducing the administrative complexity of healthcare would allow providers to spend more time with patients and not on paperwork, the authors say.
