Editor's Note

Implementation of a Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH) program for patients undergoing ambulatory laparoscopic cholecystectomy in a Kaiser Permanente practice model was associated with significantly reduced length of stay and unplanned hospital admission in this study.

The analysis included 878 patients in the preimplementation period and 1,082 in the postimplementation period.

Length of stay for patients assigned to the PSH model was significantly shorter (162 minutes) than that of the non-PSH group (308 minutes).

Unplanned hospital admission was significantly higher in the non-PSH group (8.5%), compared with the PSH group (1.7%).

Seven-day readmission rates were similar for both groups.
