APIC calls for improved medical device reprocessing instructions, guidelines

Editor’s Note

The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) is advocating for clearer reprocessing instructions for medical devices to improve patient safety and efficiency, Outpatient Surgery Magazine August 19 reports. Many current instructions for use (IFUs) are considered overly complex, outdated, and difficult to interpret, especially for complex surgical instruments like GI endoscopes. APIC’s new report, “Modernizing Medical Device Instructions for Use (IFUs): Infection Preventionists Speak Up for Patient Safety,” highlights the challenges posed by these instructions and calls for significant revisions.

A survey conducted by APIC found that 70% of infection preventionists (IPs) consider IFUs unnecessarily complicated, with many reporting they prioritize protecting device warranties over patient safety. The survey also revealed that 84% of IPs frequently contact manufacturers for clarification on IFUs, yet many do not receive helpful information.

APIC is urging policymakers, manufacturers, and other stakeholders to develop a standardized format for IFUs that prioritizes infection prevention and patient safety. The organization recommends a centralized, updated repository for all IFUs and better communication from manufacturers regarding updates. APIC’s initiative seeks to streamline reprocessing instructions to reduce confusion, improve compliance, and ultimately support positive outcomes for patients.
