Bootcamps provide ballast for new OR managers

OR managers fairly new to their positions filled their toolboxes during two new manager bootcamps on October 2.

Arguably the hardest part of any OR manager’s job is the human resources element. Handling performance issues and understanding the requirements of the Family Medical Leave Act, for example, are two areas that can consume considerable amounts of time. Leaders from UPMC St Margaret—human resources manager Katelyn Printz and surgical services director Dawn Vocke, MSN, MBA, RN, CNOR—unpacked ways to manage these kinds of staffing issues effectively and efficiently.

In a second bootcamp, the focus was on business concepts such as supply chain, capital budgets, and developing a business case. Attendees heard the perspectives of Beth Bozzelli, MBA, RN, CNOR, director of surgical services, operations, and service lines group, Hospital Corporation of America; Gabriel J. Bullaro, MBA, associate chief operating officer, Los Robles Hospital (HCA); and Philip Jaklich, MS, RN, director, Spine and Total Joint Center, Sky Ridge Medical Center.
