The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is tracking a new COVID-19 Omicron variant, EU.1.1, that is responsible for 1.7% of new cases in the US and up to 8.7% of those in the western regions of Montana, Colorado, North and South Dakota, Wyoming, and Utah, the June 26 CBS News reports.
It is still too early to know whether the EU.1.1 variant, which has also been rising steadily in some European nations, will lead to new or different symptoms in the US, the report says.
The report also notes that, according to the CDC, virtually all Americans are now estimated to have antibodies from vaccinations and/or COVID-19 infections, and a growing share of hospitalizations and deaths are now from reinfections.
