CMS releases 2023 top citations for ASCs

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) published 2023 survey data for ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs), highlighting top citations, ASC Focus June 7 reports. Due to system migrations, public data updates halted since May 2022, but CMS staff provided data to ASCA on May 30, 2024.

The 2023 survey data, from 3,023 ASC surveys, includes state agencies and accrediting organizations. According to the article, “ASCA expects the [Quality, Certification & Oversight Reports] page to be updated soon to allow the general public to access this information directly.”

For the CMS Health Surveys, infection control remains crucial, with three of the top 10 citations related to it. Top citations include (number of citations is in parentheses):

ASCA urges ASC administrators to review the Infection Control Surveyor Worksheet and Appendix I of the State Operations Manual to help avoid these citations.
