Colorado is the first state in naton to pass legislation regulating the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in pivotal decision-making, including in healthcare, according to a May 22 report in Politico.
The new law has sparked significant debate, according to the report, with some viewing it as a potential catalyst for excessive regulation nationwide, while others see it as a necessary step for ensuring accountability and transparency. Governor Jared Polis says he hopes for additional fine-tuning before the law takes effect in 2026.
Among other goals, the regulations aim to address algorithmic bias, increase disclosure form technology developers, and, overall, bolster consumer protections in critical healthcare decision-making. Lawmakers carved out exemptions for technology complying with existing standards set by the Department of Health and Human Services.
