Business managers in need of cost-saving strategies won’t want to miss the opportunities to learn from their colleagues on Thursday, February 1, during the 2018 OR Business Management Conference.

Effective inventory management is one obvious strategy, but how to reduce supplies while still satisfying providers is not always clear. OR leaders at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center have adopted a radiofrequency identification-based inventory management system to track everything from point of entry to point of use within the OR, as well as for reordering supplies.

William Hammond, CHFP, CPHIMS, director, Alex Lentini, MHA, CMRP, CPHIMS, manager, and Daniella Nelson, CMRP, PMP, project manager, will discuss the implementation and results obtained with this new system.

Another strategy is raising cost awareness among surgeons—something many organizations are striving to do. As a follow-up to their 2017 presentation, OR leaders from the UC San Diego Health System will discuss changes they have made to their surgical receipt, a tool designed to enhance data transparency and help surgeons cut costs.

Ron DeLeon, MSN, RN, CNS, CNOR, clinical nurse educator, OR; Thomas Hamelin, DNP, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, senior director, perioperative services, transplant services, and imaging services; Blake Stock, MBA, business operations manager, perioperative & imaging services; and Madelyn Uy, BA, operating room supply chain manager will share their ongoing journey.
