Editor's Note
The ECRI Institute on November 6 released its Top 10 Health Technology Hazards for 2018. The report identifies potential sources of danger involving medical devices and other healthcare technologies to watch for in the coming year.
Topping the list is ransomware and other cybersecurity threats, followed by endoscope reprocessing failures. Fifth on the list is improper cleaning of devices and equipment, and sixth is unholstered electrosurgical active electrodes. Ninth is flaws in medical device networking that can lead to delayed or inappropriate care.
All items on the list are problems that can be avoided or risks that can be minimized with careful technology management. Registration is required to access the list.
PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA-Health technology safety-from safeguarding medical devices and IT systems against ransomware attacks to avoiding misconnections of enteral feeding components-requires that healthcare facilities identify the possibility of danger or difficulty with those technologies and take steps to minimize the likelihood of adverse events.
