Effectiveness of charge nurse training on leadership style, resiliency

This study finds that a charge nurse orientation and professional development program is effective and improves leadership style and resiliency.

A random sample of charge nurses was selected from an 11-hospital healthcare system to pilot a standardized charge nurse leadership training program. The sample included 19 control and 22 intervention participants.

Of the 22 intervention participants, there was a statistically significant improvement in transformational, transactional, and leadership outcomes. Similarly, there was a statistically significant increase in resiliency scores.

The training also elicited higher satisfaction with leadership behavior, followed by effectiveness, and the ability to motivate.

Providing formal training and professional development opportunities for charge nurses is key to the support of quality indicators such as patient satisfaction and nurse retention, the authors say.
