Editor's Note
In this study, the composite outcomes of death, stroke, myocardial infarction, renal failure, or repeat revascularization at 5 year follow-up were similar for patients who had off-pump and on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) procedures.
The researchers also found no significant difference in cost or quality of life between the two techniques.
The study included 4,752 patients at 79 hospitals in 19 countries−2,375 in the off-pump and 2,377 in the on-pump groups.
The findings indicate that both procedures are equally effective and safe, the researchers say.
