Guthrie, a not-for-profit, integrated health care system that operates in the states of New York and Pennsylvania, last week opened the Guthrie Broome Orthopedic and Spine Surgery Center in Johnson City, N.Y.
The purpose-built center, which Guthrie has nicknamed “G-BOSS,” opened after completing 28 surgeries since its soft launch earlier in February.
“With this center, we are bringing high-quality surgical care out of the inpatient hospital setting and closer to where patients want it: care that is safer, more efficient and more affordable,” said Edmund Sabanegh, MD, MBA, president and CEO of The Guthrie Clinic.
Guthrie claims the facility, which features four ORs and 17 private recovery bays, is the first in New York’s Southern Tier that is dedicated exclusively to outpatient orthopedic and musculoskeletal surgical care. “By moving procedures such as total joint replacements and spine surgery into a specialized outpatient setting, G-BOSS is helping patients avoid traveling to larger metro areas, including New York City or Pittsburgh, for this level of care,” stated the healthcare system.
G-BOSS also represents a first-of-its-kind partnership for Guthrie, as it joined with local independent surgeons, Guthrie Lourdes Hospital of Binghamton, N.Y., and ASC development and management firm Constitution Surgery Alliance on the facility.
Guthrie said G-BOSS, which is expected to create “more than 30 new professional roles,” is part of an $18 million Empire State Development investment by the New York state government to revitalize the former mall where the ASC resides, Oakdale Commons, into a destination for health care, retail and childcare. Guthrie’s presence at the site now includes the new ASC, the Guthrie Johnson City Pavilion medical office building, a retail pharmacy and a fitness center. The idea, said Guthrie, is to “create a more seamless experience for patients from consultation to surgery to recovery.”
