Healthcare employment in the US rose by 54,000 from October to November, according to the latest report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), released December 6, a figure “in line” with the average monthly gain of 59,000 over the prior 12 months. Total nonfarm employment rose by 227,000.
Healthcare employment also trended up in ambulatory healthcare services, which rose by 22,000, and hospital employment, which rose by 19,000.
Both the unemployment rate, at 4.2%, and the number of unemployed people, at 7.1 million, changed little in November, BLS reports. Both figures have increased compared to last year, when the jobless rate was 3.7% and the number of unemployed was 6.3 million.
