Have you noticed anything different about your home city’s skyline this week? In honor of National Nurses Week, buildings and landmarks across the country are lighting up in support of what Gallup has ranked for more than 20 years as the country’s most trusted profession.
The force behind the lights is the American Nurses Association (ANA), which organized the “#NursesLightUpTheSky” campaign to rally the nation. Participants range from the Wrigley Building in Chicago to Houston City Hall to Capella Towers in Minneapolis. ANA urges citizens to snap a photo with a participating building and tag it on social media to demonstrate solidarity.
ANA’s social media campaign is far from the only example of nurse advocacy this week. Restaurants and other businesses throughout the country are offering discounts to show their appreciation. For others—including lawmakers in places like Rhode Island—advocacy is translating to action. As detailed in a May 6 USA Today report covering the nationwide activities this week, research overwhelmingly demonstrates the need for such action to ensure safe working conditions and address rampant burnout.
