Indian surgeons used the Apple Vision Pro augmented reality (AR) headset for the first time in a live bariatric surgery in New Delhi, according to a May 20 report from New Delhi Television Ltd (NDTV).
Including a sleeve gastric bypass and a Single Anastomosis Duodenal-Ileal (SADI), the May 17 surgery lasted 40 minutes. “Apple Vision Pro provided a highly immersive and interactive 3D environment, allowing Dr Bhandari and his team to visualize complex anatomical structures with unprecedented clarity,” NDTV reports.
According to the report, the procedure was performed by Dr Mohit Bhandari, a leading bariatric surgeon, at one of the surgical centres of Pristyn Care, which employs more than 200 specialty surgeons across hundreds of partner hospitals and clinics. The 45-year-old patient weighed more than 340 lbs and suffered from obstructive sleep apnea and high blood pressure.
Previously, Apple Vision Pro has been employed for shoulder arthroscopy in Brazil as well as a complex spinal procedure in London, the report notes.
