New data released in the Protenus Breach Barometer shows more than 3.14 million patient records were compromised in 142 breach incidents reported to Health and Human Services or the media from April to June 2018, the August 8 Healthcare Informatics reports. This number is up from 1.13 million breaches in the first quarter.
The report also notes that 29.7% of insider breach incidents were repeat offenses, meaning if employees breach patient privacy once, there is a greater than 30% chance they will do it again in 3 months and a greater than 66% chance they will do it again in 1 year. Of insider breaches, family snooping is the most common violation (71.4%).
