What does the future of healthcare look like? That’s a complex question being pondered by patients, providers, and lawmakers alike. OR Manager Conference attendees gained some important insights during the opening keynote address by David C. Chin, MD, MBA, on Monday, October 2.

Dr Chin, Distinguished Scholar at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said that although many aspects of healthcare delivery models are still in flux, they are generally shifting to a more collaborative team approach that involves the entire episode of care.

He explored the evolution of healthcare financing from the time that providers began reporting quality results to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to the development of rewards and penalties based on performance to the emerging value-based system. To be successful in this new model, organizations must train and involve physicians, nurses, managers, and other health professionals in managing health improvement and cost collaboratively across the continuum of care, he explained.

The keynote presentation was sponsored by Smith & Nephew.
