As healthcare delivery shifts from a fee-for-service model to value-based care, providers must collaborate on everything from preoperative optimization to postoperative outcomes. To help nurse leaders responsible for the postanesthesia care unit (PACU), the 2017 OR Manager Conference has added the inaugural PACU Manager Summit, a 3-day program that targets best practices to improve patient satisfaction and outcomes.

One of the biggest challenges in the PACU is patient throughput, and a half-day workshop on Monday will share lessons learned at Massachusetts General Hospital. For example, the PACU there is used by multiple departments, which has made it necessary to broaden the scope of PACU nurse education and refine discharge processes. Janet Quigley, MSN, RN, nursing director of the PACU, will discuss changes they have implemented to improve utilization of pre- and postop PACU bays.

Staff competencies and effective communication are staples for success in any healthcare environment, and several breakout sessions will delve into the specific skill sets needed in the PACU as well as tips on mentoring and breaking down silos. Other sessions will explore the role of data analysis and how to implement an enhanced recovery after surgery program for the PACU.

The PACU Manager Summit provides an opportunity to earn 19.0 contact hours and is also approved for 14.75 AEU hours.
