Planned Parenthood used the occasion of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago to offer free medication abortions and vasectomies at a mobile clinic, the Chicago Tribune reported August 19.
According to the article, the group aims to demonstrate the possibilities of accessible reproductive healthcare when supported by favorable policies. The clinic, housed in a 37-foot retrofitted recreational vehicle, includes a small waiting room, bathroom, and two exam rooms. It was designed to replicate the experience of a brick-and-mortar health center but with the mobility to reach patients in more convenient locations. This was reportedly the first time the mobile clinic was used in Illinois, although it has been deployed elsewhere since its creation following the fall of Roe v. Wade.
The mobile clinic’s presence in Chicago attracted both patients and protesters, The Tribute reports. About a dozen anti-abortion activists gathered near the clinic, holding signs and expressing their opposition to the services being offered. Others expressed relief and gratitude for the accessible care.
Democratic nominee Kamala Harris has been vocal about her intention to restore federal abortion rights, a key topic following the 2022 Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade. Since the end of Roe, Illinois has seen a significant increase in out-of-state abortion patients, with nearly 17,000 traveling to the state in 2022—a 49% increase from the previous year, the Tribune reports. This surge reflects the tightening abortion restrictions in neighboring states, highlighting the critical role Illinois plays in providing access to reproductive healthcare.
