Editor's Note

Whatever the nomenclature may be—preference cards, procedure cards, or pick lists—chances are, your department leaders would like to see them winnowed down. On Tuesday, January 31, OR Business Management Conference attendees will have an opportunity to learn from several individuals who have tamed this beast.

Eliminating redundancy and standardizing workflow before going live with EPIC were the goals of a process improvement project at Lehigh Valley Health Network. Janeen Quanstrom, MBA, and Alexandre Warman, MBA, will discuss how they cut preference cards by 44% and met EPIC implementation deadlines (“Maintaining Doctor Preference Cards Across a Multihospital Health Network—A Process Created Prior to Going Live with EPIC”).

At Intermountain Healthcare, shifting from preference cards to procedure cards has led to greater standardization, transparency, and meaningful data across the system’s 22 hospitals. Jeannette L. Prochazka, MSN, RN, ACNS-BC, and Ann Z. Putnam, MSN, BSN, CNOR, will share their experience (“The Journey from Doctor Preference Cards to Doctor Procedure Cards”).

A CPT group-based system is challenging to implement but worthwhile. Toni Wing, BSN, RN, CNOR, of Coratek Perioperative Consulting, will explain how the system can minimize case delays, improve reporting accuracy, and help right-size the number of preference cards (“Establishing CPT Group-Based Preference Cards”).
