In this study, researchers project that the burden of complex surgical site infections (SSIs) after primary and revision total hips and knees will increase 14% from 2020 through 2030 because of an aging population.
Using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample, census population, and National Healthcare Safety Network data, researchers projected a total burden of 77,653 SSIs.
Reducing the rate to the US Department of Health and Human Services target of 30% would prevent 23,297 SSIs and reduce morbidity, mortality, and Medicare costs, the researchers say.
