PSH model improves postop outcomes

Editor's Note

Implementing the Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH) model resulted in improved patient outcomes, patient satisfaction, and shorter hospital stays in this study presented October 22 at the Anesthesiology 2016 annual meeting.

The study included 1,356 patients who had total knee, hip, or shoulder replacements. Half received care under the PSH model, and half did not.

In the PSH patients, the researchers found:

  • a 9% decrease in imaging tests
  • a 22% decrease in the number of preoperative lab tests
  • an 87% decrease in units of blood used per case
  • a decrease in average length of stay by more than half a day
  • an increase in patient satisfaction, with patients reporting better pain management and physician communication.

The PSH model emphasizes the cost-efficient use of resources and patient shared decision making, the authors say.

CHICAGO - Decreasing the number of tests, blood transfusions and length of time in the hospital, while improving patients' pain management and communication with physicians were the results of implementing the Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH) model of care at TEAMHealth Anesthesia at Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, Fla., according to a study presented at the ANESTHESIOLOGY® 2016 annual meeting .
