Recent ASC openings, projects and deals: UM Health-Sparrow, Cleveland Clinic, OrthoArkansas, HCA

Here’s a roundup of the latest ASC openings, construction and ownership news:

UM Health-Sparrow to build new ASC in Lansing, Mich.

The University of Michigan Board of Regents last week approved two major construction projects, a behavioral health hospital and an ASC, at University of Michigan (UM) Health-Sparrow to improve access to services for patients in mid-Michigan.

Groundbreakings for the facilities, to be based in Lansing, are scheduled for this summer, with plans to open each in 2028.

The $60-million UM Health-Sparrow Lansing Ambulatory Surgery Center, located west of the main hospital in Lansing, will feature four ORs at its opening, with options to expand. “The new surgery center will care for patients currently undergoing procedures at the 100-year-old St. Lawrence campus and will handle some cases currently performed at the Lansing hospital, where operating rooms are nearing capacity,” the system stated in a press release. The ASC facility will include MRI to reduce wait times, added the healthcare organization.

“This represents an incredible leap forward for us in moving our outpatient surgical services from an aging building to a new building that contributes to a vibrant medical campus in the middle of Lansing,” stated Connie O’Malley, Regional Chief Operating Officer of U-M Health.

Cleveland Clinic announces progress on construction of Florida ASC

Cleveland Clinic announced that its new West Palm Beach outpatient and ambulatory surgery center is slated to open in November 2027. The facility “nearly quadruples the size of the current Cleveland Clinic Health Center,” stated the health system.

OrthoArkansas breaks ground on North Little Rock ASC

Paxton Media Group reported that OrthoArkansas, which currently operates 10 locations including two ASCs and three urgent care clinics throughout The Natural State, held a groundbreaking ceremony earlier this month to mark the start of construction of a new outpatient surgery center in North Little Rock.

The new ASC, at more than 47,000 square feet, will feature 10 ORs, 20 pre-op bays, 20 PACU recovery bays and three overnight stay rooms. It will be designed to allow for future expansion, with the ability to add up to four additional ORs “as patient needs grow,” said the organization. Construction is expected to be completed in 2027.

“Our goal is to continue providing high-quality, patient-focused care in a modern environment that improves efficiency while helping reduce costs for patients,” stated OrthoArkansas President Kirk Reynolds, MD.

Montecito Medical Real Estate acquires two HCA ASCs from NexCore

Commercial real estate services and investment firm CBRE Group announced it has facilitated the sale of two HCA Healthcare ASCs and medical outpatient buildings built last year from Denver-based healthcare real estate investment and development firm NexCore Group to Nashville-based privately-held medical real estate acquisition firm Montecito Medical Real Estate.

The HCA ASCs and accompanying medical offices, built in 2025 and both fully leased, are in the Houston suburb of Katy, Texas, and the HCA Timpanogos ASC in Orem, Utah, located on the campus of HCA’s Timpanogos Regional Hospital. The Orem ASC, leased to Central Utah Surgical Center, features 10 ORs, four procedure rooms and 32 recovery bays, and is described as one of the top 5% largest ASCs in the country.
