Editor's Note
Total hips can be performed safely and effectively on an outpatient basis, finds a study presented March 3 at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.
The analysis included 549 patients who had mini-posterior arthroplasties at an ASC from 2008 to 2014 and were discharged the same day. Their mean age was 54, and 68% were men.
The average time until patients were up and walking after surgery was 2.5 hours, and time to discharge was 7.37 hours.
Only three were admitted to the hospital--one for pain control, one for migration of the acetabular component, and one for polyarthralgia with hypotension, MedPage Today reports.
No medical or surgical events put patients at risk
