Session: Fostering harmony among multi-generational perioperative teams

Editor's Note

A standing-room-only panel discussion outlined the strengths and challenges of multigenerational workforces Monday afternoon at the 2024 OR Manager Conference, offering insights into different generations' needs and values as well as strategies for fostering harmony.

The panel, all from Main Line Health’s Lankenau Hospital, contained a representative from the  baby boomers, generation X, millennials, and gen Z. Each described how they bring different skills, values, and work preferences to the OR, as well as how they leverage these traits in themselves and others for better team dynamics and patient care.

For example, baby boomers are known for their strong work ethic and loyalty,  which allows them to build substantial institutional knowledge. Generation X values self-reliance, family balance, and open-mindedness, bringing a mix of technological adaptability and respect for established practices. Millennials, representing the largest group in many teams, prioritize work-life balance, seek career mobility, and value connection. Gen Z, the newest generation in the workforce, values flexibility and has a high level of comfort with technology.

Panel members emphasized that these generational traits can be positive but also can also cause friction. Differences in work habits, communication styles, and expectations can lead to misunderstandings, such as when Gen Z’s job mobility or Millennials’ emphasis on work-life balance contrasts with Baby Boomers’ dedication to hours on the job. To address such conflicts head-on, the panel advised open communication, personalized leadership, and setting clear expectations to foster mutual respect and minimize conflicts.

Leaders highlighted several strategies they implemented to manage and benefit from generational diversity. For example, adopting self-scheduling through electronic tools like Kronos, which empowered nurses to choose shifts that align with their preferences, accommodating Millennials’ and Gen Z’s flexibility needs. "Lunch buddies" (to sit with new personnel) and personality assessments also reportedly facilitate connection across generations.

The presentation concluded with actionable insights for engaging team members, creating transparent communication channels, offering mentorship, and more.
