Spatial computing trial shows promise for enhancing OR efficiency, reducing strain on surgeons

Editor's Note

Spatial computing technology could enhance surgical precision and ergonomics, according to a September 16 announcement published in EurekAlert!

The report covers how surgeons at UC San Diego Health are pioneering the use of Apple Vision Pro in the OR to evaluate its potential for displaying medical imaging, vital signs, and surgical camera views in real-time. The idea is to improve workflow efficiency and reduce musculoskeletal strain on surgeons, who often endure long hours in crowded ORs.

According to the report, the surgeons continue to use traditional OR monitors alongside the new technology for comparison. Performed under Institutional Review Board supervision, the study aims to address challenges with these traditional imaging systems, which can contribute to neck and shoulder pain. The trial marks the first time Apple Vision Pro has been used in surgery, with potential to revolutionize the OR environment and improve patient outcomes.
