Editor's Note
Carotid artery stenting and surgery are equally effective at lowering the long-term risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, or death, finds this study led by researchers from the Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, Florida.
The risk of stroke after either stenting or surgery was about 7%, and the development of restenosis was 1% per year for both.
This federally-funded clinical trial followed 2,502 patients for 10 years at 117 centers in the US and Canada.
Patients and their physicians now have the option to select surgery or stenting, based on the patient’s medical condition and preferences, the authors say.
