Editor's Note
A recent study by RIVANNA® Medical, a leader in medical imaging technology, highlights a rising interest in anesthesiologist careers across the US, showing a 46% increase in online job search activity from August 2020 to August 2024, Rivanna Medical reported in October 2024. The study analyzed search trends and regional variations across the country using Google’s search index scores, with Texas and Georgia leading in interest levels, each scoring the maximum of 100. In total, 14 states scored 91 or higher, showing strong and consistent interest in anesthesiology positions nationwide.
Expert insights suggest multiple factors fueling this demand. Brandon Togioka, MD, vice chair of clinical research for the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University, attributed part of the interest to a thriving job market, with anesthesiologists receiving frequent job offers that prompt online searches. Additionally, the appeal of locum tenens, or temporary positions, which often offer higher pay and benefits, has also contributed to increased job search activity. Anesthesiologist Steve Garber, MD, also noted in the article these positions are increasingly popular as they offer flexibility and competitive compensation.
The study also emphasizes that matching anesthesiologists with the right institutional fit is critical. Dr Togioka advised institutions to consider candidates' experience with specific techniques, familiarity with bedside ultrasound, and any prior teaching credentials. While the role of artificial intelligence in hiring remains secondary for now, attributes such as procedural experience and regional ties play a significant part in the selection process. As anesthesiologist roles evolve and demands grow, this study highlights trends that healthcare systems may use to attract and retain talent, particularly in high-demand regions.
