Study: Same-day aquablation surgery safe for ASCs

Editor's  Note

Aquablation is safe and effective for treating patients with benign prostatic hypoplasia (BPH) in ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs), according to a video published September 23 by the Urology Times.

The video features a discussion with Kevin C. Zorn, MD, FRCSC, FACS, lead author of the study “Safety and Efficacy of Same Day Discharge for Men Undergoing Contemporary Robotic-assisted Aquablation Prostate Surgery in an Ambulatory Surgery Center Setting-First Global Experience.”

Published in the journal Urology, the study involved a prospective cohort of 60 men with significant BPH who underwent Aquablation at a single ASC. Researchers assessed the patients for outcomes including pain levels, hematuria, and voiding efficiency. Of that total, 59—98%--were discharged same-day.

In the video, Dr Zorn describes his experience with more than 100 cases. He touches on the importance of educating patients and ensuring coordination between surgeons, nurses, and anesthetists. He also discusses the intricacies of the procedure, including challenges with anterior tissue and a technique he calls the “Zorn Zamboni.”
