Cardiothoracic surgeons at Emory University Hospital have conducted the first US implantation of the BrioVAD System, a new ventricular assist device (VAD) from BrioHealth Solutions, Cardiovascular Business News reported November 25.
According to the article, the BrioVAD System features a magnetically suspended, hemocompatible pump designed to minimize adverse events and improve patient safety and quality of life. Already used in hundreds of patients internationally, the device is new to the US.
The implantation by Emory surgeons marks the launch of the INNOVATE clinical trial, a non-inferiority study comparing the safety and effectiveness of the BrioVAD System to existing therapies for end-stage heart failure. Other participating institutions include Cleveland Clinic, Duke University, and the University of Chicago. All will focus on both short- and long-term outcomes, following patients for a full two years after treatment.
