MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s Verstandig Pavilion is now home to a moveable MRI system that enables real-time intraoperative imaging, NBC Washington reported September 18.
As detailed in the article and accompanying video, MRIs are typically performed the day after surgery, sometimes revealing residual tumor tissue that could have been removed. With a system that slides on a track, surgeons can immediately verify the success of the procedure while the patient is still on the operating table. This particular intraoperative MRI system is unique in the local area and one of only four in the US.
In addition to brain tumor surgeries, the moveable MRI system has applications in treating movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, and dystonia, the outlet reports. The technology also enables remote collaboration, allowing other surgeons to join the procedure virtually and offer real-time consultation.
