Survey: Compensation rising for in-demand APPs

Editor's Note

According to the 2023 survey from consulting firm SullivanCotter, published in August 2023, compensation for Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) has grown at a faster rate than pay for physicians and nurses, BusinessWire November 15 reports.

The final report included data on more than 124,000 individual APPs and over 3,400 APP leaders from nearly 820 organizations across the US. Findings include:

  • Over the past five years, the median cash compensation for APPs rose 16%.
  • The 2023 results show larger increases for primary care, medical and surgical specialties (each at 5%) and modest growth for hospital-based specialties (2.5%) for both base and total cash compensation (TCC).
  • In comparison, the 2022 results found higher-than-normal growth in primary care and hospital-based specialties.
  • There continues to be high demand for anesthesiology providers, reflected in rising compensation rates. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) saw a 9.6% increase in median TCC in 2023. In the past 3 years, median TCC for CRNAs rose 15.6%, and median hourly rates increased from $89.62 in 2020 to $102.91 in 2023.

The 3-year trends in particular point to a rising demand for specific specialties with organizations expanding compensation packages to attract and retain those professionals.
