The Joint Commission announced on September 13 that it is reviewing its standards and requirements that go beyond the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) conditions of participation in the Medicare and Medicaid programs to determine whether some should be permanently retired.
“As the [COVID-19 public health emergency] nears its end, CMS has been reviewing the waived requirements to determine whether some should be permanently retired. The Joint Commission will similarly address the necessity of our own unique requirements,” the announcement stated.
The Joint Commission said it will consider specific questions as it reviews each standard and requirement, including whether the requirement in question is redundant and whether it addresses an important quality and safety issue. It will also conduct field reviews and engage experts as necessary.
