Rebecca Wiseman, PhD, RN, associate professor and chair of the University of Maryland School of Nursing at the Universities at Shady Grove, has been awarded a grant to establish the Maryland Nursing Workforce Center at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), according to an October 8 news release.

The $265,467 grant will fund the project over 2 years, during which Wiseman will ensure that Maryland is meeting the recommendation in the Institute of Medicineā€™s 2010 Future of Nursing report to improve collection methods of workforce data.

The Center will provide a centralized repository of data to use for:

  • projections of future nursing resource needs
  • understanding workforce diversity
  • planning for educational programs to meet current and future requirements
  • identifying geographical distribution of nursing resources
  • grant writing.

The Center also will help the state gather data in three key areas: faculty, pipeline, and practice.
